Pyramids and Pharoahs: Year 6 learn about Ancient Egypt
Year 5 and 6 have spent the last half term learning all about the Ancient Egyptian civilisation.
After a trip to the Leeds City Museum we learnt about the gruesome, yet fascinating, process of mummification. Then we mummified fish using baby oil and salt in place of Natron and plastic cups instead of canopic jars! We wrote a report about Howard Carter’s famous discovery and use different sources to research Tutankhamun’s tomb then created detailed sketches of the items that were found. Our work inspired us to write some exciting Egyptian stories and reports.
We used mod rock to create canopic jars focusing on symbols and design features. Studying historical sources helped us learn more about the Pharaohs, the Egyptian gods and ancient religious beliefs. We found out about the food that was eaten at the time, made some Egyptian bread and use recycled materials to build model tombs. A fantastic time of fun, learning and a little bit of squirming!
