Tom Palmer's Visit
Year Six were lucky enough recently to be joined by one of Yorkshire’s most prominent children’s writers Tom Palmer.
Tom joined us in school at the very start of our new school year, to engage our fantastic Year Six children with their writing challenges. Tom has been described by Booktrust as a “…true reading hero, responsible for motivating many thousands of young people to get into books” Tom is the author of three football children’s series, Football Academy, Foul Play and The Squad as well as many others. His books have been shortlisted for numerous national prizes and his understanding of reading and writing as life skills are invaluable in the education of our children moving forwards.
Tom worked for the day with all of our Year Six children, looking at the entire process of writing from start to finish. We discussed how Tom became an author and how everyone has the power to write for others and to provide pleasure in this process. We talked in depth about how Tom completes intricate research, editing and planning when he starts a new book and the children were given the opportunity to ask questions to learn more about each of these details direct from the horse’s mouth.
We are lucky to have booked Tom to return to school in the Autumn 2 term, where we will be launching a ‘Tom Palmer writing challenge’ based around one of his most recent books ‘D-Day Dog’. Keep your eyes peeled for the upcoming work from the children to see the impact Tom has had during his visits.
