Year 4 and a visit to the Stone Age!

As part of our project ‘Stone Age to Iron Age’, Year 4 had the opportunity in art to show their inner caveman or cavewomen art skills and transported their classroom more than 10,000 years into the past.

In each of the Year 4 classes, children upturned the tables, took out their primitive tools and got to work decorating their ‘caves’ in the style of the time period – the Stone Age. All the children had a superb time teleporting their room to something like a cave in the Neolithic period. They had the chance to chose from charcoal, wax crayon, chalk and pens to decorate their own caves, and because their inspiration was original cave paintings they attempted to create pieces of art that felt like they could be from the time period by including hand prints, animal sketches, historically accurate weapons and people. There was also a focus on the art skill of sketching using techniques like stippling, hatching and cross-hatching too.

Overall, it was a fantastic afternoon full of creativity and fun whilst the legacy of the chalk and charcoal can still be found on some classroom carpets today!
